Sometimes war is 100% justified. Your naive western liberal point of view is what evil to flourish. The people of Ukraine are being horribly treated by their corrupt government. They owe a major financial debt to Russia and are refusing to pay it so Putin is taking back what’s rightfully his. Sadly knowledge history and foreign policy isn’t what the west is known for. I’m pleasantly surprised by the US aid provided. Direct involvement especially early would just cause escalation but arms and intelligence is valuable in a conflict like this.

Really interesting that, given the air force numbers, Russia has so far failed to establish complete air superiority, at least for now.
I just can’t understand what do people mean by saying “no air superiority”? Russia is consciencly not using aircraft to not harm civilian infrastructure. Ukraine has no real airforce or any meaningful air deterrance. Some soviet scraps that all got destroyed on the first day of conflict. Or do you really believe that conscirpts us armed with stingers are gonna pose a threat to an actual modern air force?
You don’t need to go far to see what russian air force is capable of: just look at Syria where that was nearly the only thing that was being used.
@Denis B 1. Ukraine is much better armed and organized that the opposing forces of Russia’s past campaigns.
2. Establishing air superiority doesn’t also mean they would be implicitly harming civilian infrastructure. We’ve read reports of Ukrainian fighters downing at least 1 confirmed troop transport plane suspected of confessing 140 paratroopers. If you’re correct then that shouldn’t ever be possible even if Russia is holding back for some reason
You should consider that both forces may be more closely matched in terms of modernization than you think.
They are holding back because these are gonna be the people we’ll be living with as neighbours for the decades to come, not some islamic country far away. Makes sense to me.
I won’t agrue on the modernization of ukrainian army but from the picture that i have of the situation – even if they are well armed, their only able and motivated forces – nationalists and mercenaries are all stacked on the east side. Their largest and maybe the only resistance point is port Mariupol on the east which have been completely surrounded today by the southern and eastern groups.
That’s where the Air force might get used since that group there is unlikely to surrender. And looking at what CNN is showing there – the only civilian casualties reports i’d deem trustworthy – they are proving my point. Once that falls – the rest of Ukraine will fall very quick.
And from what i’ve heard on CNN – U.S advisors strategy for them is doing some sort of rural partisan warfare. But that’s not gonna happen – we are talking about modern Europeans, not Jihadists here – they aren’t gonna die for no reason. And like i said the bulk of the force that U.S hopes will resist is surrounded on the east and about to get wiped.
@Denis B I believe they are holding back because an egregious number of civilian casualties is one surefire way to invite NATO intervention.
We will have to see what the breaking point is for the surrounded Ukrainian soldiers though we have already seen examples of some of them being extremely steadfast in their resistance. The defenders of snake island come to mind. We have also seen Ukrainians execute attacks in areas that Russia should be in full control of. The attack near Russian controlled Hostomel that killed a Chechen general is one example. I’ve read analysis of the Russian tactics comparing it to an attempted blitzkrieg but without the follow up waves that are required to mop up the broken defenders and secure supply lines. But in this case there was no follow up and in most places the defenders did not break. Instead the Russian’s maneuvered around them towards kyiv, inviting all manner of guerilla tactics in their now exposed flanks. Not to mention this is all occurring in the context of NATO 100% feeding real time information to the defenders. I’m not saying Ukraine necessary can, or will, win here; but Russia so far has done everything wrong and Ukraine seems to have done enough right such that they are extracting the maximum cost for every Russian gain.

NATO intervention – i personally wouldn’t believe that’s goinna happen. The US already shoveled the so-called prooved civilian casualties and war crime cases on us and hit us with all the sanctions imaginable. If they really start happening – well nothing’s even changing on the media’s perspective.
On snake island – i’m not sure if you are aware but that story was already proven to be a lie. Zelensky deemed them all dead and they are all alive giving interviews on how they feel being buried by their president. You don’t have to take my word for it – Ukrainian president already mentioned them being alive and well. I cannot comment on any other cases since its the first time im hearing about them.
I agree that we’re doing a lot of things wrong – mostly of how slow this is going. And there has been large concern about it – and the only explanation is to avoid civilian casualties.
It’s being compared on how our tactics differ from the US with examples in Syria. One instance was US leveled Raqqa very quickly while we took a long time capturing Aleppo while trying to avoid civilian casualties and having a large amount of our own casualties. And i do not approve of this approach at all since our boys are getting killed just because we are the ones trying to be humane.
I don’t know about the situation outside of the southern/easter groups that have encircled Mariupol. But it makes sence to me that the combat ready part of Ukrainian army is mostly concentrated on the east – because that’s where the front was before we interfered. The relevant fight is going on there right now. And as of yesterday they were encircled in Mariupol. And once that part is cleared you can expect the low motivated parts of their army to fall quick. But the next days will show if that’s true or not.
