-[ Interviewer] Okay. Bill, what does Mustang stand for? – Well …( rock and roll) -[ Announcer] A new Mustang, which Ford Motor Company evidenced for the first time today. Mustang( rock and roll) – Car looks great! – Thanks. -[ Announcer] America’smost popular sports car. – Mustangs to me, meanpower and turmoil. You know, you talk about sheer looks. People eyeballing ya going down the road, girls always wavin ‘, and things like that whenyou were a young man.( giggling)( rock music) – When I by drive one of my Mustangs, I get thumbs up from everybody. It’s really cool. – This car is my baby and it’s not going anywhere, ever, ever! Like, I’ll lives here in it if I “re going to have to”. -[ Man] It’s the best sportscar ever originated, age .( machine revving) – Discovering the movie “Bullet”when I was in high school actually cemented that thatis the signature car, right. It’s everything that Ithought a car should be.( device switch) – See what I imply?( rock music)( engine accelerating) – It feels like you’re a superhero. -[ Narrator] Everyone is wondering, what’s next for Mustang? – I’ve read about the Mustang having electrification capabilities. – Oh, wow. – You wanna hear that horse power. – Yeah, well maybe tothe newer generation, it’ll be a wing! – It needs not to lose what it is.( upbeat music) -[ Man] This is a pivotal moment in time to be in the car industry.-[ Man] This isn’t like a little thing. This is a dreadful changein the dynamics of cars. -[ Man] We are all was just trying to figure out how to be more environmental friendly. -[ Man] But we’re too planningfor a quite different future. Ultimately, autonomous driving, but on that journey is electrification. -[ Man] There are so manyfactors that’s impelling the switch to electrification not a question of if, it’s a question of when.( rock and roll) – Almost 100 years ago, Henry Ford himself was looking at electrifiedas a engineering. Our firstly generationbattery electric vehicle started their own lives as aproduct we needed to do to be compliant in thezero radiation territory. The light-green governments, if you will .( rock and roll) – Initially, it was all about assortment and it was all about really being light-green. – The team was tryingto show to the customers that we have this incredibletechnical capability. It was going to be a greatbattery electric vehicle. But it wasn’t gonna bea emotional nature outdo. It was just a car. – And when I first it, that’s the very reason why I said oh boy, Houston, we have a problem. The vehicle looked like science project. – I believe that that myself, who’s gonna want to buy this auto? It wasn’t accurately an SUV, it wasn’t accurately a Sedan. – When I came into the role as CEO, the electrification hadstalled in the company. We snap up the existing prototype. We said we wanna start over.( drastic music) Ford stands for much more than really meetingenvironmental regulations. We settled everyone in one agile group and we said bring us lots of prototypes. It was about unleashing thepassion and productivity of people who wanted to interrupt something so brand-new that it was actually risky. – Team Edison was this brilliant idea of creating a company within a company. A big coordinating visionary troop to create aspirational product. – The best action of increasingelectric car take-up in the world is to offset thingsthat beings truly demand. – We know patrons. They’re looking for aguilt-free transportation with iconic blueprint thatcan represent themselves. We needed to do something that was gonna be state-of-the-art, cutting edge, and stimulating. We wanted to deliversomething that was magical. -[ Man] Then we started to ask ourselves, what would get beings excitedabout electrical concoction? – And it was actuallyJim Farley who intimated what if we did it a Mustang?( upbeat music) – I’ll never forget thefirst time my father produced dwelling the Mustang.I was six. I just remember belief it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.( upbeat music) – My first Mustang was a’ 69 Mach 1. -[ Man] My parent a buy a 1964 1/2 289. My two sisters likewise have Mustangs, so it’s a family affair. – I got my firstly Mustangbefore I could even drive. – My Mustang is everything to me. – I grew up in Vietnam and my first image of aMustang was everything that I thought was great about America. – It signifies iconic. It means stylish. – You can feel the supremacy, hear the interference, and shriek the tires.( tires wailing) Just meets ya feel better. – The feel you get whileyou’re drivin’ down the road and people only look at you and they’re like that’s a Mustang, and you’re like that’s my Mustang.( instrument accelerating) Mustang symbolizes drivingreally fast on the highay, listening to some really loud music.( device hollering) – It’s about capability. It’s about rendition. It’s the really pap, pap, pap. – Incredible! – It’s an original. It’s an American original. – You could remove all thebadging and blindfold somebody until they get in the car and they are unable to drive down theroad and know it’s a Mustang.- It needs the attitude of a Mustang. The feeling of when you’re driving it. -[ Man] I would capture that in the form of a practicality vehicle with a drive structure that’s all electrical. – It will be a big challenge. -[ Man] We attracted ineverybody we could find. All different decorators, different ages, different experiences, and said what if that was Mustang? – It was really a mandateof show us what you’ve got.( upbeat music) – Everybody from every studio around the world sketched day and night trying to come up with a betterconcept than what we had. It was nuts. – The decorators, they wereall just super agitated. It’s like you were almostinventing as you were going. -[ Man] It’s amazing how thingsstarted to happen quickly.- This is a huge differencefrom the other fellowships. To take your most cherished icons and to ensconce in theelectrification see. It’s unheard of. – This is where the journeystarts to become difficult. How close to Mustang should it be? Do we employed a pony on it? Do we call it a Mustang? Is it a close cousin? Is it a sibling?( envisaging) – It was exhilarating, but it also cared the( beep) out of me because you are messingwith the crown jewels.- Consumer from one of ourresearch clinics was saying are you guys crazy? – Part of the company’s on trial here because that symbol is so cherished, it means so much to everyone, and it has a very highstandard of performance. – I was absolutely adamantthat it not be a Mustang because, to me, it couldn’t possibly deliverupon the Mustang promise. – When I accompanied that it was gonna be an SUV, I truly dug my heels in. Mustangs are two doorways , not four. They’re a coupe , not an SUV. And, we were doing afour opening, SUV, electrical. Holy cow right. This is where the supernatural happens. This is the spirit of Ford. – Once I started to look atthe prototypes of this idea, I knew we had lightening in a bottle. -[ Man] You could seealready from that first clay, that this could be somethingreally, very unique. – The designing unit didan stunning place with it and then all of a sudden itstarted to make sense to me. If we actually wanna beproud of this vehicle and everything it can do, we oughta call it Mustang.- Well , now we had stimulated the decision so we have to deliver on it. – We were literally tasked with you guys need to change thefuture trajectory of Ford. You guys need to create a new icon. – I think everyone’s first suspicion is Ford’s taking away the coupe. We’re not. The coupe’s there. This is a new horse in the stable.( amiable music) – That actually well-lighted a volley under us because it’s one thing to have a little bit of a design language, it’s another thing to saythat it’s wearing the pony. – You could keep theMustang emblem on anything and people will know what it is. It’s on hats, shirts, becausethat crest is mythical. – The hour we called it a Mustang, everybody re-doubled act. Here’s what I can bring to this, this is something that more I can do, please, can we do this? We begins with the exterior.( trendy move music) – When you think of allthe classic clues in styling of the different Mustangsthrough the years. -[ Man] Long-hood, the muscular haunches, the lines that cut throughalmost like tendons in muscles.-[ Man] It’s imprinted on your intelligence. -[ Man] Need that swooping roof-line. The tri-bar lamps. All of that is there, butdone in a really modern, actually fluid unique lane. It’s got that powerful look to it. You are well aware looks like it’smoving when it’s sitting there. – And then we progressed to the interior and we said the same thing. How much affect should ithave from historic Mustangs and how much should it beone foot in the future? – So striking that balance was one of the most difficultthings for the entire team. The exterior has to be instantlyrecognizable as a Mustang, but on the interior of motor vehicles, we wanted to single that thisis new, this is the future. – So Mustang is the feel ofthe skin steering wheel in your hands. It’s the smell of the interior. – Mustang produces that obsession, that strength to a segment that’s super, super digesting. And I want it to be a space-ship, I want it to be somethingthat no one’s ever seen or known before.Mustang is a me car. It’s about me, it’s about self-indulgence. This is a we vehicle. You wanna know these things together with your family, your spouse, and so we wanted the interiorto be an open comfortable feeling but still have the key linesthat make it a Mustang. – You know, a great deal of people make an age where they enjoy Mustangs, but they too have children, and it’s not the mostpractical choice for them. So this vehicle you canput your family in it. It’s gonna be great. – So our team works throughlistening to customers and actually working with theproduct development team on how to get this combined in way that really assembles purchasers’ possibilities. – We don’t want it tobe a discipline campaign. Our direction croaked more towards starting that iconic Mustang product.Really deep diving into the heritage of Mustang color and materials. – So we went through every finish you could possibly think of’ cause it’s the combinationbetween futuring it and meeting it electrical, but too you gotta keep it Mustang.( drastic music) – Electrification is so muchmore than an electric motor. It allows us to remix what a gondola is. This concoction is gonna be likea technology-tour-de-force. That’s what clients want.( electric music) – Our challenge was howdo we combine engineering with this iconic American muscle car and have it actually fit together. – We wanna interprettechnology in new human ways , not just for the wiz-banging part of it, but the nature people will love to use it. -[ Man] We were consideringthat this would be the most connected vehicle ever. All of the ecosystem that “youre carrying” with your mobile phone inside the car. You have all of these other accountings, so why would you even bothernot having your Ford account connected to you every where you go? – Just like you update your telephone, we can update the car. This is a whole new interfacefor beings to interact with their cockpit.- It mostly be adapted to your behaviours and stores fixing it easierand easier for you to use and reach the things that you love. – We had some of the mosttalented people on the planet, but I don’t think anyonecould have imagined when we first startedwhere we were gonna end up. You know, a year out, yourvehicle will be different, it will be better than whatyou had when you bought it.( gears changing)( engine revving) – Everyone knows the hubbub of a Mustang. This doesn’t have that, so what are you gonna do? – So we expected ourselves atfirst, what should it sound like and it came out prettyquickly, authenticity is key. So we started to use VR tools and sound implements and studio implements, so who is able to immerse yourself in what this gondola could be because it will have a unique sound that it emanates from the vehicle. – Once you smacked trigger drive, the vehicle’s gonna start comin’ at you. It’ll stop next to you. -[ Man] It’s more satisfy andwith the character of the car it’s more fitting, excellent, terrific, affection it. Thank you guys.( stunning music) – Possibility with any carwearing the Mustang badge are gonna be big. Every Mustang’s better than the last, most powerful, most impressive, more of what diehard Mustangcustomers certainly, certainly love. This is something very different. -[ Man] You can’t lose the heritage, you can’t lose the style. – It’s gotta be recreation to drive, it’s gotta be eye-catching, and most of all it’s gotta go like hell. – Electric vehicles are channel faster than gas-powered vehicles. They could start that gondola reallygo if they truly wanted to.-[ Woman] We actually sizedthe high-pitched voltage battery in the motor to meetthe performance targets. It’s amazing how fast it drives.( machines hooting) – Aerodynamics is extremely, extremely important on this vehicle, so we’rereally working to drive the draw as low as possible to enable better assortment while still allowing it to look great. – We are fetching achievement and environmental-friendlinesstogether in one vehicle in a way that we’ve neverbeen able to do before.( spectacular music) – Once we reassured ourselves analytically that we had all of the ingredients to deliver spirit ofMustang, we needed to test. – But when you’re developingan all brand-new vehicle, you have to go and torture these things in a way that would justblow most people’s minds, but they have to berobust, it ought to have real, and it has to be able to wear the pony. I flew down to North Carolinawhere we have a simulator and I said to the team this is a Mustang. It’d better drive like one. – That was a big, hugemoment for the program team. – When I went out of the simulator, everyone was waiting tohear what I was gonna say. And I looked at the entire crew and I said it’s not a Mustang. And you could just almostfeel the aura leave the room with the gasps and justpeople just thinkin’ what did he just say? – You could see the teamwas now in a approximately, I would call it, tizzy becausenobody is looking forward to it. – He said chaps, we have allof the fundamentals in place, but it was all about the fine-tuning.We have to go back andmake this a Mustang.( upbeat music)( amiable music) I sat down with Ron and Isaid we have to add more. We have to add more operation, we need to relook at every single element. – Then we literally went through and did a side-by-side comparison to say does this pass the litmus test of living up to Mustang credentials. – We work in virtual opening with our poses then we vanished up north andtested our physical examples.( instrument shout) We took the cornerstone vehicle out to the track and we knew we had somethin’ special.- You push on the accelerator pedal and it’s instant thrill. And it was at that point I said we’ve got it, we really’ve got it. – I went back down and redrove what was nowgonna be the Mustang. It was awesome.( striking music)( gentle music) -[ Man] We nursed a hugeevent with everybody who is a key stakeholderin Mustang together. – Thousands of people working on this and it comes to a moment where there’s three of us staring at it and we look at each otherand we go we’re ready to go .( upbeat music) -[ Man] The reaction thatcar got was unbelievable. – This is a perfectcombination of both world. A high tech vehicle with iconic motif. – The combination of thattechnology with excitement, with Detroit’s swagger. – This vehicle will surprise people and after 40 years with this company, I gotta was talking about, I’m exhilarated. – The vehicle is gonna becalled the Mustang Mach E. Mustang means American freedomand independence of feel and mach represents fast. It’s an E, good for everybody. – This is 1000% a Mustang. – It’s an incredible Mustang. – It’s a new pony in the stable.( gentle music) – We’re starting to movemore and more away from internal combustion locomotives. Beings have to embrace that and embracin’ it in an electric Mustang is better than embracin’ it in no Mustang.- Mustang’s gonna continue to change and continue to be the carthat we all know and love – And I meditate the Mustangname’s gonna go forever. Probably have spacecrafts ridin’ around that say Mustang on it.( amiable music ).
