brian uh thank you so much for being here maybeyou’re gonna be my my uh guest the whole time during the podcast i do like to talk i got alot of opinions yeah i don’t know if people want to hear them but i do love to talk so that’sgreat that’s great i like to talk too man uh man great to have this man great man here he’sone of my heroes brian frias he trains a lot of jiu-jitsu since 2012 um and he started 2009 rightright uh like 2010 yeah yeah right when i got back from iraq and yeah in north carolina i startedtraining yeah tell us a little bit about your your uh background like uh about you brianuh all right well i grew up in the bay area in san francisco bay area and then joinedthe marine corps and uh i wanted to come to the the west coast so naturally they sent meto the east coast because that’s it you know you want this we’re going to give you the oppositeokay so it was cool i lived in north carolina and um we went to iraq when we came back i wasin uh i was in pretty good shape wanted to start doing jiu jitsu my my dad’s from brazilmy one of my cousins said you should you should do this jiu jitsu thing i think you’d like itand i went to this little gym with no name and there was a like a high school emo kid you knowthey have the hair in front of their face and one of those so so i go to roll with this tinylittle this tiny little teenager thinking i’m gonna crush him and uh and he put me to sleepand then they they had to shake my legs and and wake me up and i thought then i need tolearn this uh obviously there’s something bigger here that i need if someone just yeahif there’s someone that’s uncalled yeah yeah why you didn’t know how to tap or uh you just noi didn’t want to you know like i didn’t realize i didn’t understand you just do you remember youjust go to sleep remember which submission he got a real naked joke oh yeah from the back likepretty much everyone it’s so easy if if you don’t know anything and suddenly there’s a spider monkeyon your back and that put you to sleep you know how big was the guy tiny guy he was like 15 yearsold a little little tiny skinny guy i was probably i don’t know 165 170 but very very lean and yeahand lifting weights and over time and stuff yeah really well i thought you know i thought i was ingood shape but did you guess like you felt like yeah yeah yeah yeah it takes like 30 seconds andi was exhausted you know and you’re doing all the military like training yeah yeah but no jiu-jitsuno no jiu-jitsu you do um they do make map and uh depending on the unit you’re at orthe environment you’re at some guys take it way more seriously than other guys once i gotinto jiu jitsu and i started to meet people who were really into fighting and and i startedto meet guys who took it very seriously some some awesome so after that day like you starttraining every day yeah after that day yeah as much as i could no i tried i would go uhi’d go to the unit and ask people to fight me i’d go into the gym and if i saw someone gruntingreally hard i’d ask them if they want to fight and hey let’s go man roll yeah i was all in and thenthat’s uh like nine ten years ago and then and then uh when did you join uh uh police uh 2014.i got off active duty and i moved to san diego because uh it just seemed like a nice place tobe and then i knew they have all the jiu jitsu here yeah like the world capital of jiu jitsu isdefinitely san diego so i moved out here and uh i was using the gi bill to go to school and i wouldstill i was in the reserve so i’d go on miramar and i’d go into the gym and ask people tofight and that’s how i would keep up with jiu jitsu and i’d go to different gyms and dotheir trials and stuff like that and uh i ended up rolling with one of your students and we’re inthe different gym no at the base yeah yeah and um yeah i i forget his name i’ll have to look it uphe’s still training with us uh no he moved back to the east coast he was a brown belt really awesomeguy but i trained with him and i beat him in the gym at miramar he just he had a jiu jitsu shirton i was like oh you want to roll and i told him i only roll for three months you know just likejust lie to him and then uh and then we rolled i beat him and he’s like you need to come to autosynand uh meet andre and i had watched your it was jason jason i don’t remember but i watched your iwas watching your videos on youtube before i came to san diego so i knew who you were and uh in youryoutube videos you look like a monster i was like man this guy’s gonna be mean you know and i’m usedto military people he’s going to scream what year was that one year 2000 what you’re already leavingsan diego yeah yeah i was living here so it was like 2011 12 around there and uh and he broughtme in and i rolled uh ruled with you and nassar a couple other guys who are still around and thatday you said you gotta train here stay here and i got i got beat up a lot so i was like i need tobe here if this is where i get beat up this is the place yeah you’re you’re uh purple belt yeahand now you’re black belt you got a black belt like in 2015 right no no no last uh uh last yeartwo years i’ve been a black two years yeah this is this is my second year no way yeah seriously yougave it to me oh yeah i know i know but i think it was like longer no no no i think it was likebecause i remember like when i gave you the the black belt we have the black wall mats you know itwas like two years ago three years ago right two two okay this is the second year i think you’rei think you’re my first the first black belt first black belt at a new otto’s headquarterslike when you move here right i remember yeah yeah man i gave like a lot of black beltsalready yeah you’re giving them out like everyone gets one no no only the tough guys that’slike a crowning achievement you know yeah when you get that it’s like a super power i’ve studied tenyears finally yeah i get something to show for it and then uh you show up the next day and you fightsome blue belt here and that gives you a hard time and you’re like man do i really deserve this blackbelt everyone here is so good amazing man amazing but brian like you you helped me a lot likeyou not only like you you you have your your uh military career right and then you’re you’reactive uh working in the police department um you’re from the swat team right now yeah rightfor the last two years and a half right yeah like two and a half years yeah and i remember whenyou were studying i saw like everything happening yeah yeah like you always like give me the newsand tell me what’s what’s happening like you’re training the you going a lot to the uh whatis the name of the base like you guys go and train uh pendleton yeah the penalty you goto the penalty all the time like to train them there and um and i remember when youjoined the this swat uh you you you’re trying to you start applying for the swat team and you toldme everything hey i did the physical training tomorrow i have this like you’re really excitedyeah and i know you love what you do i know and um i know you since 2012 right and we’vebeen together for the last the past eight years and um man like it’s it’s amazing the passionthat you have for your work for what you do um for me you’re like uh you you even though youdon’t you don’t compete in jiu jitsu you train with the with the high level against the highlevel uh black belts world champions here at atus and you helped me a lot during my training campsuh especially for agencies agcc 2013 you’re there every day like training and then agc 2015 you’rethere every day training 70 you’re there every day training 19 you’re there man like you you camelike for you complete four agc training camps and you’re not a competitor you just gave itand help us but you’re a real competitor on the streets right you gotta you gotta help thecommunity right like every single day you’re there you gotta be prepared and a lot of a lotof uh cops they don’t know how important he is to to keep active to keep training jiu jitsu uhof course like when i believe when you joined the police department you already trainedjiu jitsu right yeah you’re already trained so yeah probably you could hold andcontrol this you can control the situation way easier than a lot of cops a lot of cops likemost of them they don’t train most right yeah you know i i think like you not i think i know youhave the vision of of how is to to easily control someone right uh tell me a little bit about yourum your stories you know and you know like you have a lot of stories to share for sure i know forhow long you’re doing that how long you you you’re on the streets since 2014 24 in the department andreally only because i needed a job i was running out of gi bill i mean i was i would graduate i hadenough to graduate and stuff but i started looking for a job and and where i lived was actuallybehind the police academy i thought it was uh the navy boot camp i didn’t know it was a policeacademy and and i was running one day and uh and i asked him what are you guys doing is this navyboot camp and they said no it’s a police academy what do you got is that is that a hardjob or something yeah i never wanted to be a cop in my life and uh they said theywork for four days a week ten hours a day and that sounded pretty easy so i applied theyhired me pretty quick and uh and since then i i love it it’s so much fun you you get the crazieststories you see the the most insane things out in the street and yeah you get to you getto be in exciting situations and you have a lot of boring days too but i think that comeswith working in a larger city yeah but it’s uh overall i i like i enjoy going to work i likedriving like meeting people talking to people it’s a it’s so much fun yeah yeah man it’s like thisis it’s i don’t know if i could because i could be a cop you know like yeah it’s difficult righthere it’s a little awkward yeah yeah that’s why that’s why i want to do this podcast with you youknow because i know there’s a let’s say a negative uh side right now again against cops yeah yeahwe’re not everyone’s friend at the moment yeah but you know even the guy that’s there they’re tellingme to f off or screaming at me when i drive past really like you’re driving past and people starteddoing that right yeah pretty much every day every day yeah yeah no oh yeah all day they’re tellingus i hope my wife gets raped i hope my kids are killed things like this yeah but even that guy theguy they say those things to you yeah yeah no way every day yeah every day that’s crazy yeah evenuh sometimes people call us we show up and then they’re mad that we showed up no way that’s crazyman but even those guys the guy that’s mean and saying mean things to me if he calls me for helpi will i will show up and i will help him as best as i can yeah it doesn’t matter if he hates mei’m here to help him yeah and that’s i think like all the cops i know they’re all like thisand they they wanna they wanna help that’s the that that work like draws people you knowthey wanna be there in front and that’s what people don’t understand sometimes though yeahunfortunately um i believe like all this that’s happening is because they’re not prepared rightlike a lot of cops are not prepared this is you know yeah they they lack on confidence and becausethey’re not prepared like things happen but also there are certain situations where where uh thecops they need to take an action and sometimes people think they take the wrong action whilethey’re doing the right thing that’s true it’s like it’s like when you’re a white beltyou know you are a white belt in the in that in jiu jitsu for example you’re a white belt youdon’t know what’s going on and then you just like uh oh you know like what he did is wrong youknow but it’s not it was the right thing you know because you don’t know what’s happeningyou don’t know the law you don’t know like the job of that person you just like judgelike you just say oh this is wrong right of course there are like things that they do thatthe cops they do like it’s wrong yeah you know but i believe maybe i don’t know if i’m wrong youtell me like maybe like 90 95 of the time like it’s not that wrong right yeah yeah most i meanmostly there’s there’s millions of interactions yeah all throughout the country happening everysingle day and all like almost all of them go unnoticed so it’s definitely very rare wherethere’s a controversy if there is a controversy we all hear about it you know instantly becauseeveryone’s got it on their phone and stuff and uh i mean this is all my opinion but yeah sandiego county has a regional police academy it’s like six months long and uh i i i can’t rememberbut i think the average police academy for the the country is like five weeks or something wowso so here in san diego we’re we’re pretty lucky that the the county as a whole as a collectivecame together and we’re like we’re gonna try and really train our our new officers so ourguys coming out of the police academy are are very well prepared to handle a lot of situationsand uh they do defensive tactics once a week they go to the shooting range once a week untilthey graduate the problem i see after graduation is uh there’s not a lot of sustainment trainingyou know in i mean it comes down to money really money culture you know the the cops that you seeout there training jiu-jitsu or they’re they’re going to the range they’re doing that on theirown personal time because they want to be better they’re not okay with with being average yeahand uh there’s a lot of cops that are like that but i mean my goal is always to encourage asmany as many as we can it’s like imagine like for my perspective it’s like i want to be aworld champion i want to be or a jujitsu champion and i i just don’t train i just go i go tothe tournament without training and hoping i can handle the situation that’s what’shappened sometimes right like well one of the the frustrating things i’ll i’ll see isum there’ll be some clip from someone who says well the the officers are trained to do thisand you’re like that might be true but that training may have occurred five years ago andthey haven’t done it since then you know if you i teach you how to do an arm bar i could teachit to you for six months you do that arm bar every single day all day long for six months andthen i never teach it to you again and you never do it again and then six years from now you tryto do the armbar you’re gonna mess it up yeah you know you have to constantly be uh yeah you have toconstantly practice and be doing repetitions and keeping yourself perfect that’s what happenssometimes they do like one course and they think that’s enough for the rest of their life yeahwell i see that’s that’s the problem with a lot of training classes i go to a lot of schools andyeah and uh like go to a shooting course or a weapons course or something like this and peoplethink that they go to that course and they’re gonna get better it’s not the course that makesyou better you go to the course they give you they give you new ways to train the mindset yeahthe mindset they give you uh they introduce you to skills and then the time between that courseand your next course it’s your responsibility to incorporate those new skills into your owntraining program that’s how you get good and i think a lot of people they rely on the classitself uh this class is going to make me good the class won’t make you good it’s the training youdo after the class using the stuff that the class showed you that’s what will make you good and uhyou see too many people relying on the class the class should be your pressure test yeah you knowuh i go to like if you the the guy i talked to you about craig douglas yeah shiv works you know yougo to his class if you’ve been there before yeah you go to his class it should be a test on howyou’re doing because they’re going to do scenarios and you’re going to see how you perform in thescenarios the class isn’t going to necessarily teach you it’s not going to make you betterright then it’s going to tell you how you’ve been training up until that point and then you usethat as your benchmark to develop what your next you know whatever six months or so of training isgonna be yeah you know like here we do uh you do a roll on on tuesday we roll okay i really i gotmy my guard passed on the left side nine times but i need to work on on protecting my guardon the left side so then i’ll come up with a a program all right the next two weeksi’m gonna focus on only using the left side of my guard until i get it good yeah youknow so you find like your deficiencies and it’s like it’s targeting yeah it’s likestudying anything like yeah you study jiu jitsu and if you’re a coach you’re gonna try to applythe techniques that you think is work for your students but if you are the one that competeslike you watch for example like people join the authors online they’re going to watch rightbut then they need to practice that technique yeah right that is if they don’t they’re notgonna improve like just watching maybe help if you watch like sometimes i watch a lotof tournaments a lot of uh uh competition footage and i go and roll and sometimes i findmyself like doing that thing you know yeah but i have a lot of experience already right i havea lot of skills but for those who are starting they must like practice and drill and repeat thetechnique right and put them on that situation and a lot of people they don’t do that because ofego right yeah that’s an idea ego shuts you down yeah and and and and between uh in the policedepartment there’s there’s a lot of ego right right yeah for sure like in military people don’tespecially those types of people they don’t like to lose nobody’s wrong no they don’t want tobe embarrassed yeah people don’t like it’s hard yeah people don’t like to lose like sometimespeople say oh you know this guy is a bad loser or they say oh this guy has too much egoyou know yeah but like if you see those who who the people that doesn’t agree in being averageby being an average guy they they hate to lose yeah you know like yeah like my wife say likethe the the hate that you have for losing must be bigger than the love that you have for winningthat’s true you know i mean like because you love winning right it’s great but when you have thattaste of like oh you know i couldn’t like do the way that i should or i couldn’t achieve that likeyou gotta like you want to overcome that you know and a lot of people they don’t like todo with that they don’t like to face that so maybe that’s why they don’t train you know theydon’t think about training because they like oh if i go there i’ll lose oh if i go there those guyswill tap me or if i go there uh this guy will will show me how weak i am you know but they don’tunderstand after you practice practice practice after a while you’re gonna you’re gonnaimprove and you’re gonna be stronger yeah you know and you’re gonna get a you’re gonnaget better yeah it’s definitely that i mean that’s the reality yeah you know you’re gonna lose you’regonna get embarrassed yeah and uh you just have to suck it up and eat it you remember uh you rememberpedro pedro he’s the he was a white bell and they oh yeah so he told me shout out to pedroyeah he told me one time um he’s like man he i don’t i don’t remember how many times he wonworlds right he said let’s say andre won worlds uh five times but he’s been doing worlds for 20 yearsthat means he he lost 15 times no one says he lost 15 times no one cares they just care dude he wonfive times you know and i thought that’s true how many times have you failed like way more way morethan you’ve succeeded yeah for sure so it’s okay to it’s okay to lose it’s okay to fail and i i wasrolling with i think i told you about it but i was i was rolling with my uh my buddy chris he’sgot he’s he’s new to jiu jitsu new to fighting and uh i had him hold we were using thefake gun and i i had him in my side control i’m on my back and i had my gun exposed with hishand on the gun and uh and i said your goal is to get out the gun and my goal is to keep it andwe we were just working from there to try and figure out what’s the best way to keep the gunin the holster and man i died like say i died so many times but it’s okay that’s uh that’s theonly way you’re gonna get better you know you gotta go in you gotta get beat up you gotta youmust be miserable it’s like playing video for me it’s fun yeah you know when you play videogame you die yeah then you like continue yeah the heart starts to pump a little faster in thereal world you know oh man every time like you you have your heart like pump no when i firststarted like when i was first driving around on the street and stuff every little call you getlike a bit of adrenaline you know oh man this is going to get crazy yeah and then the moreyou do things the more experience you gain the less adrenaline just have just like tournamentsyeah yeah my first vehicle pursuit i remember uh just just a huge adrenaline jump excitementi’m chasing the cars this is awesome and uh now usually is dan driving you know usually dan’sdriving we get a vehicle pursuit we’re like nice you know actually the last the last vehiclepursue we had was a a few months ago um some guys they they pointed a gun at someone uh they werein a jeep they’re pointing a gun at some somebody and uh the person called it in and uh i was onthe phone we’re driving around in our cop car i’m on the phone with a different unrelated calljust some lady needed she wanted to talk about her uh her younger sister and just nothing nothingserious yeah so i’m talking to her on the phone and dan’s driving around looking for the jeep forthe other car and he sees the jeep and he’s like dude that’s the uh that’s the jeep everyone’slooking for i’m still on the phone with the lady and uh dan gets behind it turns the lights onand the jeep takes off it doesn’t stop so so we’re putting we got like trying to put the seatbelt on and then he’s getting uh i’m getting on the radio like uh we have the jeep it’s uh it’sgoing southbound on the 805 really fast and uh uh it’s pulling away from us because our carwould the car we had wasn’t very fast we’re getting beat by a jeep but i’m still on the phonewith the lady and i’m like i i understand you know you’re concerned i’m really sorry and she can hearyeah she can hear the car in the siren she’s like what’s going on like oh we’re in a vehicle pursuitright now but i felt so calm because we’ve done it a bunch of times so it wasn’t a problem just uh itwas pretty embarrassing to have a a jeep wrangler just we hit the freeway and it went wow wehad no chance it was just like uh on the radio oh the vehicle is pulling away not causeit’s going really fast but uh we’re just slow so yeah sorry but you know as you do thingsyou’re um you’re you just get used to it you don’t get as big adrenaline dump yeah you knowyeah and i think to me a lot of it is has to do with jiu jitsu i feel a lot more confident wheni talk to people if they’re upset i don’t have to immediately handcuff maybe i can talk to themmaybe that can even let them yell a little bit yeah because i know if i need to i can controlthem yeah you know yeah and uh it helps i think keep me calm to make clear decisions you knowman people don’t understand how how important is to train jiu jitsu no i love it i think it’s manlike for anyone for me i feel like it’s in my life not like of course physically but yeah for anyonelike you know especially for cops right because you you’re probably gonna be in situations whereuh where you gotta protect yourself protect the community protect others uh more often than thanregular people but we like civils like people that like daily basis like go to work and do theirthings right i’m a competitor this is my life right i’m a coach right now and i teach jujitsu soi’m trying to help the community as much as i can but for you that you’re a cop um it’s reallyreally important to to train jujitsu to know jiu-jitsu because it’s the best way for youto control a situation to control someone without even hurting that person right andsometimes you see videos of like two cops against one guy and then they can’t holdand control yeah yeah that’s embarrassing it’s so simple was it like a month ago the guy heuh he like jukes two of them and does a cartwheel dude come on guys you know it’s so cool man yeahyeah so so for you brian do you like okay so let’s say you talk about like being like betweenbeing a white belt cop like in the beginning right you’re a white belt cop right you have a lot ofadrenaline like any call like pumps your heart yeah like and then white belt sometimes likehe get anxiety like uh very anxious like even i like to say like a flying squirrel flying outsquirrel okay just yeah like even like oh let’s go train they like oh they feel like this right butlike after a while they start feeling more calm and they know what’s happening it’s because it’slike you’re in a dark room right there’s no light like when you don’t know jiu-jitsu there’sno light so you don’t know where you’re at but once you start learning lights on you’re likeokay so now i can see things right everything’s so clear and um we have uh jacko right john yeahman jacob is amazing like shout out to jaco uh i love to watch his uh podcasts and everything hesay he talks and he has a jiu jitsu mentality he knows jujitsu since before the ufc yeah right heknows since in 1992 i think 1991 like maybe 80s so he talks a lot about like how important is toknow jiu jitsu not only for cops or for everyone and jujitsu gives you super powers right becauseuh you get more confident like you know how to grapple you know how to scramble you knowhow to control the situation you know how to escape from certain positions and and peoplethey think especially cops like they think like they need to know how to shoot you knowit’s important to know how to shoot but like like i was talking to you uh for a while andthen you say man i see guys they’re going to the range like every day and they shoot shoot shootbut they never like go to jesus facility or just a gym and train and when they work they theyprobably gonna scramble with people more often than then they’re gonna shoot like probably theirentire career they’re gonna shoot only one time yeah or they’re gonna maybe like maybe two timesnot even there yeah maybe if if it happens right but like uh maybe 90 95 90 95 or 99 of the timethe cop would be scrambling with someone yeah i have like i mean we we might have there’s there’stimes where we get into a fight two or three times a day every day of the work week you know but howoften are you gonna have to use your gun i mean maybe never you know in 30 years you might notnever need to use your gun you maybe there are the the rare people who just happen to be in badsituations but for the most part yeah like you need to be training to fight more than you need toknow how to shoot and i wouldn’t downplay the need for good marksmanship but but if you if if youcan if you’re one of the top five shooters in the world maybe you don’t need anothershooting class maybe you need another jiu jitsu class or something exactly the otherthing i i i find for me jiu jitsu makes me nice you know when i train jiu-jitsu things don’tbother me so much i like i leave the gym i feel happy someone yells at me i’m like hey whateverdude yeah you’re already [ __ ] yeah like i don’t care man you know it doesn’t bother me but wheni don’t do jiu jitsu i’m cranky you know a little angry and stuff but it just it makes you niceit’s funny and you’re nice i try to be nice some people may not think so you know but uh wheni when i first moved here and i was like looking for a gym i’d go uh to gym to gym and uh try toroll around and if i beat the people there then then i thought just the gym’s not they’re notgood enough for what i’m looking for i need to get i need to be miserable you know i got to get beatup i like i like getting grinded yeah and stuff so uh well i went to victory one time i didn’tknow anyone there at the time but i i don’t know if if jock will remember we’ve met i met himat tournaments and stuff like that and spoke to him a few times but uh he taught a classhe was in uh i went to his class and he did uh a kimura you know and and i rolled with hima little bit it was it was pretty awesome and then when i became a cop that was thefirst area that i got assigned i worked no yeah i started working his area oh wow and thatwas that’s pretty funny i’d always like drive by what’s up guys how you doing you know yeah and uhand see like dean lister over there and stuff and then and you know he comes here yeah yeah i rolledwith him a lot one time i had him in the north south and i thought he had i think he had justhad a surgery or something on his shoulder and i i i got in in north south and and i was squeezingwith everything i’m like finally even though i got this guy and he wasn’t tapping i let go i’m likewhat am i doing wrong he’s like nothing you have it and i’m like well you’re not going out and he’slike yeah yeah he’s like i don’t have a neck he’s like he’s like a ape yeah shout out mister youknow he’s never gonna have those guys he’s so nice too man yeah very nice guy they’re amazingi love those guys we were trying to go shooting uh the last adcz we were trying to work out a daywe could go oh gosh they’re deemed listed no i think our schedule man you know something dumb butyeah and maybe next time yeah but brian like uh can you share like a what was the craziestuh story that you have like in her daily basis like work yeah hmm well it’s hard topinpoint the craziest because every week there’s something weird happening every every nightsomething happens right well you know you have the nights where nothing no one’s out on the streetnothing’s happening and you’re just sitting there like oh what’s on youtube because there’s justnothing going on but uh at least where i work it stays pretty busy and most of the time wedon’t have enough people so you’re always trying you’re like going call to call to call but uhi know last week uh uh maybe two weeks ago no i don’t i don’t remember but anyway there’s aa guy i think he was like he’s like 17 or 18 little skinny guy and he uh he has a bunch ofmental mental problems and and he uses meth which kind of seemed to go hand in hand nowadaysbut he uh he likes to get onto the roof of his house and he runs from one roof to the other roofback and forth and this uh so the guy gets on the roof and he was saying he wanted to hurt himselfand he had a butcher knife and all the cops start showing up you know like if someone’s gonna hurtthemselves we’re not gonna force our way in there you know cause like if we force a situationwe shoot the guy and he wanted to hurt himself anyway that’s not achieving anything so usuallywe’ll we’ll stay back and and try our best to to just talk to the guy and like hey come just chatwith us but he was on the roof and he had the knife but the knife was too dull to do anythingso he’s just rubbing it against his hand it’s not cutting him or anything like that you know heuh he finally goes back into his room so i jumped on top of uh then he has a knife yeah he threw ithe threw it down but he goes back inside the house and i jumped on the roof to look inside uh hishis room and and kind of get eyes on the guy and he was in there like in there playing withhimself oh my god no way oh my god that’s good you know i’m like on the radio just like he’s he’splaying with himself and then a few minutes later so then a few minutes later i was trying toget a better look and we have him isolated in that room we know he can’t get out i’m tryingto see if there’s anything else in the room and i’m i i started to balance on a uh onthe roof of the patio it’s like a flimsy flimsy uh roof and uh and one of the sergeantscan we get an update on what the guy’s doing and i look like guy he’s jerking off oh and i saidthis on the radio so then i start getting texts brian why are you saying jerking off on theradio yeah what’s wrong with you yeah but wait just for the record though we were in no dangerof him finishing it was all good oh my god but then you guys control the situation all right uhwell there’s no more knives in there the family wasn’t afraid of the guy so we we uh we allbacked out he has like mental illness like yeah yeah yeah he has mental problems and then he’salways doing meth so it’s not a good combination but we all we backed out uh we went like down thestreet a little bit and he ended up uh usually it happens a lot it’s kind of a frequent caller buthe came out of the house and once we all left and then just grabbed him yeah so it’s a easy easyresolution right there any situation that happens with you of course you’re a black belt rightnow in jiu jitsu but since you joined the the cops you already trained jujitsu right therewas any situation that happens with you that where you couldn’t control the situation uh likelike like like a guy was better than me sort of yeah like no no i haven’t i haven’t had thisreally what i was worried about i’ve had one a guy he was drunk and he uh he punched anotherguy in front of a apartment complex and so we show up everyone’s pointing athim hey that guy you know that guy punched us and stuff so i was i was putting him inhandcuffs and he’s act he’s drunk he’s trash and yelling and stuff so i put him in handcuffsand i’m behind him and he tried to headbutt me you know i i move dodged the headbutt and uh andi took him to the ground and and uh at the time we could use the carotid restraint you know whichis a rear naked choke but carotid restraint sounds nicer so that’s you know that’s what we’ll callso people don’t get confused with like a choke and like a like an air choke in a blood choke sortof situation but anyway uh he was he was still fighting so i put him unconscious real easy rollhim over handcuff him no problem but it was the time that you guys could do that yeah yeah it wasa few years ago yeah so it so that part was okay but while when i did that the people in theapartment complex and the people who called us to help they all saw saw us put the guy to sleepeven though he headbutt and tried to punch us they started yelling at us and screaming and theystarted to surround us so then we had to to call for everyone because you know i can control thisone guy i can’t control 30 people yeah so we had to we had to call for help wow i guess i shouldsay that was uh that was my my partner dan again we’ve been together the entire time and i maybe wecould get him i mean maybe we could convince him to come on because yeah of course he started youknow we started but like let me just say one day like then dan is your partner and when then becameyour partner he didn’t train jiu jitsu nothing and that’s what then and then you’re convincingto change maybe because he saw the way you’re controlling the situation it’s like i don’tknow right well everyone at work how did you convince him to do jiu jitsu everyone at work ialways try i was like hey dude you gotta train you gotta train and now sometimes i can convincepeople to come in and fight then there’s a blue or purple right now purple he just got hispurple developer yeah we gave him he’s doing great amazing well like uh amazing three weeks agoor something a month ago yeah but he so we were in the same police academy together uh we weren’tin the same section and then we got placed at the same spot for when we first got out of trainingand we were on the same squad two new guys and uh and i’ll save his his background and lethim tell it because it’s kind of funny but i end up finally convincing him to starttraining and you know he’s big he’s like he’s six two or seven to me everyone’s like sixfoot five everyone looks tall to me yeah but he’s a he’s a really big guy and uh i would say likea year after him starting to train he started to get really proficient out on the streetand uh the first two years of him training if we went to a a call and maybe a guy’s actingcrazy and stuff i wouldn’t even get involved i just stand there and watch him and and coach himand we had one guy a guy wanted to jump off a balcony right so we go into the apartment complexhe wanted to jump off a balcony and kill himself the guy ran to the uh to the back door to tryand jump off the balcony and dan grabs the guy and the guy’s kind of fighting with dan and uh andit was uh uh he had he hadn’t been training long yeah and uh dan does like a a hip toss and tossesthe guy onto the bed and then uh he starts to grab grab the guy’s hands i’m like calm down you knowput your knee on uh put your knee on my belly and so dan does knee on belly i’m like all right nowrotate him he starts rotating the guy so i’m just coaching him as he controls the guy you know anduh in now easy work oh yeah you know it was it was amazing so he saved this guy’s life you know justbecause he was learning jiu jitsu he was still new at the time so i would coach himthrough it now if we go to a call most of the time i don’t even have to do anythingit’s like that if the guy wants to fight dan it’s a like it’s a waste of my time toeven get involved i just let dan do it he can he can handcuff the guy get him in controlno problem you know it’s a and he’s so big man and i’ve convinced um almost everyone on oursquad to to start training jujitsu did you have a partner where he tried to convince he didn’tenjoy you no dan’s always been my partner oh he always been her partner yeah yeah for how longlike six and a half oh wow i didn’t know that no it’s not no i didn’t know that uh he can toleratemy crankiness wow but like he’s started just the last three four years right yeah i think likethree yeah maybe four years almost time yeah maybe three years like quick though yeah but the firsttwo years he didn’t know jiu-jitsu no he didn’t but you tried to teach him yeah yeah you tried toyeah i would i would get him until you convinced him to come to the gym yeah okay and uh and now wegot him another guy on our our uh team he’s been training about a year now with me and i mean wejust do that on my own time we go to the gym at work i throw down the mats and and just roll withwhoever’s willing to come i always put out a text like hey let’s get as many people some guys theygo on time they like i don’t want to go anymore yeah you know there’s always those guys i get likea lot of people think that they’re going to come and they’re going to get beat up but the firstthing i do i’ll i’ll sit down and i tell them you can do anything you want you want to try andhit me that’s cool i won’t hit you i’m not going to hurt you don’t worry about it just do anythingyou want and we’ll go from there and then it lets me see what their center of gravity is what theyknow what they don’t know stuff like that and uh and i prefer them to roll with me so thatthey don’t you know maybe a new guy is kind of flying squirrel and they get hurt so itry to let them roll with me to see what you can what you can do against a guy who doesn’t knowanything yeah and we’re pretty i mean i’m pretty successful at getting convincing people to trainyou know and like now with with him and dan and chris when we go to a call and chris is anotherbig strong guy like there’s there’s not very many people that are going to be able to stop them youknow if if you’re trying to fight these two guys they’re gonna control you they’re gonna handcuffyou you know and they don’t need to they don’t need to beat you up to do it that’s which is likethe golden standard of any use of force you know like i can put you in cuffs and get you in theback of the car without having to injure you if i if uh if i don’t need to you know like i gotcontrol put you in the car no problem yeah so it’s pretty awesome to watch them work so the thethe fight jiu jitsu has like a lot of different ways like let’s say different fights insideyour g2 for example you can fight jiu jitsu with striking it’s it’s mma right yeah it’scompletely different right when you roll it’s different because you got to be aware with thepunches and stuff right yeah and then you have jiu jitsu with the gui yeah and then you have jujitsunogi and then you have jujitsu with weapon like someone care a gun you gotta know how to scramblewith someone so for all type of jiu-jitsu you have uh you have to have like it’s it’s like onemindset but you gotta like you gotta be ready for uh the attacks of your your your opponentright against you in certain situations you got to think differently for example um youcan play like upside down guard for example right uh you can do really well but if the guycan strike you it’s it’s harder for you to guard it’s a it’s a different way to play guard forexample no gee without striking i play guard more sitting like i like to sit up like without myback on the floor but if there’s a striking the guy can punch and kick me i gotta keep myback on the floor feet up yeah exactly so uh it’s all different i know you like to trainghee no ghee uh you like to do all your tactical uh training as well with your partners andright now we start doing classes here at atos like that like every every three four weeks wehave a class like that to help people so they can see like how it works like to fight withsomeone if they carry a knife they carrying a gun like how you behave how you control changesthings yeah so i know like in all the fights that you do here all the training that you do as a copyou always have in your mindset when you roll with me you’re rolling with anyone at the gym do you doyou you roll as they’re carrying something or not like how how’s your mindset when i first startedthe cop thing i was more focused on competing and uh and so when i would come here that would bethe goal like if i could catch a barambola on a guy i’m gonna do it whatever they give me i’ll goinverted whatever i can get is what i’m gonna take and then within the last two years i’ve started tofocus more on oh like am i gonna be out competing anymore no because i like i f i like to trainwith with all the world champions i like doing the the competition class and getting beat upi like getting you know black eyes and cut but but i don’t think i’m at the level where i’mgonna be a six-time world champion so i need to like tailor my training appropriately so that ican have a retirement you know yeah so uh so now when i go and i train i’m thinking well what’smy purpose today and uh a lot of times it’ll because you’re a black belt that’s why you thinklike that oh maybe it gives you power yeah so so when i go into training i try to have a purposelike okay let’s in my mind i’m gonna pretend the guy has something in his left hand so my when iroll with this guy my whole goal is to control that left hand and uh and prevent him from usingit against me and even if my partner is training for a competition it’s still i can still trainyeah no problem yeah but i don’t know they don’t know you just know yeah but i make a lot of a lotof goals like every time i train now you know or i do goals like that when i train for tournamentstoo like let’s say i’ll play guard today oh i’ll play to my wrong my bad or i think like i’m onlygonna use this this is the only pass i can use to pass i just do armbar today and sometimes you’lllose you know because of it but exactly but you learn what works you put like a limit like yeahyeah so that’s how we have a lot more targeted uh purpose in my training now that’s awesomeyeah and uh but you suggest like you suggest if you working to help the community if you wantto improve your skills as a self-defense you gotta practice the regular jujitsu class too yeah youcannot just think like that the whole time one of the biggest you gotta start jujitsu i mean youget the fitness right like jujitsu is amazing for your your fitness and your health yeah anduh in you learn how to control people all that stuff that everyone knows but i think one ofthe biggest benefits that you get from it is the the ability to stay calm in a really terriblesituation you know a huge guy bigger than you he’s better than you he’s he’s got his knee likedriving into your belly you think you’re gonna throw up or poop yourself or something and andyou’re able to make decisions you’re not freaking out or someone’s uh got their you know your limitsyeah you know your limits they’re like choking you yeah and you have uh you know man i might i mightgo to sleep in the next two to three seconds what can i do and it prevents you from freaking out andthat translates into the real world if something’s stressful so there’s a dynamic rapidly changingsituation jiu jitsu helps my mind focus in those situations and make clear decisions wow i don’tever want to be operating in the red you know where i’m not i’m i’m operating on the unconsciouslevel i don’t want to do that i want to know every decision i make i want it to be clear i wantto have it thought out even if that thought takes a fraction of a second yeah you know i wantto have some kind of thought without it being reaction yeah whenever you’re working off areaction it’s a not always right but a lot of reactions means you were a step behind whateveryeah for sure you know so so i don’t i don’t like the idea of operating in the in the redyeah if that makes sense i want to have a clear head i think jiu jitsu helps withthat i know a lot of guys will say i don’t i don’t like to train in ghee that’s notrealistic or i don’t like to train in nogi because everyone has clothes on why would i train in nogior something i think you have to do both you get something out of doing both you know in no gii find it to be a lot more athletic a lot more you know your clubbing wrestling heavy or at leastyou know your style which is that’s what i am i train with you so it’s a lot more wrestling a lotmore aggression and nogi and maybe a more finesse and technical and not to say that both aren’ttechnical but maybe a little more technique and of course in the ghee but i think both doing bothbenefits you overall you need to train in both my favorite is uh is whatever we’re training ifwe’re training a lot of ghee i love ghee if we’re training a lot yeah for sure so i don’t reallyhave yeah a preference i like to do both yeah i do feel lighter in nogi though i feel like i’mfree yeah i can move yeah you know wait but i love both i think you should more fun you know and youshould always incorporate weapons you got to you have to yeah otherwise if you only focus on thesport there’s nothing wrong with that especially that’s how you make your living but if you onlyfocus on the sport you go out into the world with this false sense of i am invincible no youknow i’m i’m a six-time world champion i can go out there and beat anyone until you meet the guywith a knife and he stabs you you know what i mean you you yeah i learned gotta do some right yeah ilearned a lot from you like lately about all this um when you say like oh if the guy has a gun jumpon him if the guy has a knife run from him yeah yeah yeah i was like i would i would i wouldthink like like the other way around like oh if he has a gun maybe i gotta run you’re notgonna outrun the bullet exactly and then if you have a knife oh i can’t jump on him nobut then he can stab me in stairway so um man it’s it’s it’s awesome like to to see to knowthe way you think like when you train because if if you’re a cop and then you’regonna start uh trained jiu jitsu uh you gotta have this mindset right likeyou gotta start training be humble open you cannot like always argue as well like oh whyare you gonna learn this if i’m not gonna use this on the street but it’s a technique that you gottalearn you know you gotta learn that situation you gotta learn all the snares right and we as acompetitor or we as a jiu jitsu hobbies where we train jitsu we train the art as a self-defensewe also need to incorporate the weapons right yeah so we know and and for a cop jiu-jitsu lookway better on camera yeah right way better yeah you okay i’m a cop i’ll train boxing ori’ll train muay thai i’ll train karate or train taekwondo you’re not gonna be kicking the guy onthe head knock him out you know it’s too easy for you to just like scramble it to him like controlhim knee on belly boom you know control his arm done he doesn’t move now you handcuff him boomdone you settle the situation so jiu jitsu definitely is uh it’s it’s a must for every singleuh police department every single cop so they they must know that you guys should do it and stop withuh with your ego you know leave her you go away just join academy and also a lot of cops theydon’t like to train in the regular academy because sometimes they’re gonna roll with someof the arrests you know like a week yeah yeah yeah you know cops tell me you knowthey’ve been to gyms in san diego yeah and uh and and some of the people they’ve arrestedthey’ve seen in the gym so they’re always like is otto’s okay yeah am i gonna you know it’s likeyeah hopefully that doesn’t happen it’s okay yeah that’s why i told you you’re like you know you’relike i don’t hate cops i’m like man some people aren’t gonna like you now you know but uh withwith the basics of jiu-jitsu the first thing when you start learning like how to base and allthis stuff uh some guys i’ve had tell me well i’m never gonna use this sweep you know or somethingand you’re you’re right you probably will never use that sweep in the real world but what itteaches you is balance it teaches you how to understand the body mechanics you know it it givesyou something that there’s no other way to get it and well like when you when you touch someone thatyou don’t know you have a roll with them you’re gonna roll when you grab them immediately rightaway you know if they understand their center of gravity and if they don’t you know already you’relike well this is a waste of my time yeah but that understanding the center of gravity if you don’thave it already that takes a long time to to build yeah and i think all the basic stuff the basicsuites like how to stand up stand up in base yeah yeah and how to plant yourself so you’re notgetting knocked over i mean when you roll with a guy who hasn’t rolled how often do you you go tosweep them and they fall before you do the sweep they’re like you’re not i’m not sweepingyou you’re just falling yeah it’s just funny because you don’t know and it takes that’stakes the longest thing for people to learn so i i i believe you have to do the basics you knowyeah and everyone thinks they’re like i’m gonna punch the guy and knock him out you know like hehow often do you watch boxing and someone gets no this is not only for cops but for people yeahthe real world right like very rarely do you see someone get knocked out with one hit it happensbut it’s really rare and the guys who are who are focusing that as they’re living you know like aprofessional boxer a fighter even those guys man very rarely do they get a one-punch knockout andand every fight end up like in the yeah there’s always something that’s right always some sortof if there’s a contact it’ll be a hold yeah so i’ve had people tell me you know you don’t likestriking or something like this i i like getting punched i like punching is it’s fun you know butit’s not that i don’t like it it’s a if i’m gonna if i’m gonna punch or strike i’m gonna make itvery purposed and targeted you know i’m not just going to hit you six times is that going to endthe fight faster is it going to achieve anything in the real world probably not you know but ifuh if you have an a knife in your hand and i have control of the arm and i do like i poke you inthe eye or i do one punch that kind of like gets your focus away from the arm maybe that gives me achance to deal with that knife so if if i’m gonna use a strike i i have a reason it’s very targetedand purposeful you know also a lot of people they think that they know how to punch and thenthey punch and then they break their hand you know what i mean like that is the reality of thingspeople they think they know better in their mind than they are in real life yeah you know yeah andmost of people like jiu-jitsu has a really small community jiu-jitsu is a small community comparedwith the whole world so most of the people that you gotta scramble and control like let’s say thebad guys uh they don’t know what they’re doing they don’t know yeah like even if they havelike a gun or something they don’t know like how to behave and how to behave when somebody’sis grabbing them or scramble with them but i would like to bring our conversation to to adifferent uh perspective for example like i know you taught me a little bit about uh umhow to handle with certain situations like that can happen in the real world forexample if there’s a an external and internal oh yeah yeah the types of types of scenariosincidents if you have a care rep or not like i would like to have you like break downthat a little bit yeah those who needs to okay to understand and learn because it’s not onlyabout the cop uh situation but also about you as a civil like you walk in the street and you seelike a scene like for example you told me that uh there was a a guy that you know that you got inthe scene where somebody got shot and he was there helping someone helping that guy who got shotbut who knows if that guy who got shot was the first guy that got shot by a by a serial killerthat was like shooting everyone on the block yeah so and he was there helping the person alreadyso there are a lot of situations like can you talk a little bit yeah yeah and i’ll talkabout that one because it’s a it’s a good one it’s a good example to go over so first i wouldsay every uh you know it every situation is going to be different there’s a lot of differentways you can come at it and just because i say you should do this doesn’t mean that’s theonly way to achieve what you need to achieve so yeah like some people lose their mind whenyou’re like wow this guy could have done that so so to get that out of the way but if uh ifi’m thinking about my own personal safety or the people i care about safety i like to ilike to look at incidents in two categories and i’ve i’ve mentioned it to a lot of people inthe past so maybe someone’s heard it before but i kind of have like incidents that are goingto be directly impacting me they’re they’re internal to me and my sphere of influence thoseare gonna be stuff like i’m getting robbed someone’s breaking into my house or uh or they’reyou know attacking my car something like that i have no control really over how it starts youknow you can always kind well you can’t always but you can usually control your environment somethings like that but for the most part these types of incidents fall into the i don’t initiate thisincident then you have a second type of incident that’s external to you and those are the ones likeyou see a robbery you see a guy hitting a woman or you see someone that’s shot and they’re laying onthe street or maybe they’re not shot you see a guy that’s passed out on the ground it’s your decisionto get involved or not to get involved and there’s a there’s a crossover between the two of thoseand in that crossover is is going to be your own mental logic tree that you have to develop the yesor no questions of how am i going to get involved why and if i am so the first thing i’ll look atis what do i have on me currently and and we’ll we’ll go into that that shooting laterbut so what kind of gear do i have with me do i have a gun me probably right i’m i’m lawenforcement and when i’m off duty i usually have a gun with me on my person so maybe the answeris yes maybe the answer is no do i have a knife yes no maybe do i have first aid inside with meor close by and i would say most incidents that you run into in the real world is gonna be likelike first aid related and you should have some sort of first aid equipment with you at all timesuh uh do i have a bulletproof vest right like oh i see an active shooter i want to go help themokay do you have a vest you know do you have a weapon and a vest to get in there and start makinga positive difference in that situation if you did does that vest clearly say police or securityor something i’m the good guy don’t shoot me i’m trying to help you something that that candifferentiate differentiate you from the bad guy so that’s kind of the gear type of stuff and youreally internally need to look at like i mean if i what kind of shoes do i have what kind ofclothes do i have for cops cop sees a guy on the ground he’s uh he’s driving home does the copget involved i don’t know if let’s say there’s a robbery and the cop sees the robbery happening coppulls his gun out hey you put down the stuff the guy puts down the stuff he calls 9-1-1 9-1-1 showsup the first thing they’re going to see is a guy pointing a gun at another guy so do you have yourbadge like available so you can hold it up so when the cops get there they can see like hey you’realso a cop so you don’t get shot but if you’re not a cop and you have the gun you have to thinkyou’ve got to think that through you know like how are you going to put yourself in a situationwhere you you’re not going to get yourself shot maybe maybe you tell someone else hey you gocall 9-1-1 tell them i’m here i’m pointing a gun at a bad guy when they get here i will takethe gun and put it down okay or something you know these are things you need to think about thatgoes with your gear with your gear you’re gonna have to think about the training are you trainedto use the gear that you have with you and uh and with training while i always like to talk aboutsustainment and proficiency going just because you went to a class that said this is the best wayto do something doesn’t mean that you can do it you learned an example of how to do something it’syour job to keep doing that and get good at it and maintain proficiency if you’re not proficient atdoing it then you know when when there’s blood or something bad happening you’re definitely notgoing to be able to do it in that situation so your training needs to be continuoussustainment in order to maintain your proficiency uh of whatever skill it is i mean it might befirst aid whatever like if i in my car right now i have a little bag it’s got a tourniquet a chestseal some z fold and um some dressing which will i live in a city so that’s pretty much all ineed if those things don’t keep the guy alive long enough for medical aid to come that person’sprobably not going to make it anyway that’s that’s life right so uh so make sure that you’re youhave like some sort of ongoing training plan to to keep up with it the next thing that youhave always no matter what type of situation under your control is your fitness you know youhave to you you need to be out doing distance run doing sprints doing strength training mobilitytraining you have to be taking care of your health that will directly affect your ability tomake good decisions and to perform if if there’s a fire and you see someone inside that’s strugglingto get out and uh you know you have a broken back should you really go in there and try and are youoverweight yeah or you’re overweight should you really go in there and drag the guy out or uh youknow i’ve been to classes where everyone it’s a shooting class and and everyone’s got a pistol andstuff and they have a sub second first round shot draw like they can pull their gun out and shootyou in under one second right that’s really cool but you know very rarely is the situation whereyou’re gonna be justified in shooting the guy so if uh if you’re super overweight and you have tolike the guy grabs you and you’re you fall to the floor and you’re grappling on the floor and within20 seconds you’re out of breath you won’t even be able to grab your gun to shoot the guy becauseyou’re out of shape you know so you got to have some personal accountability and and focus on yourfitness your strength mobility endurance all of this it needs to be a lifestyle it has to be ithas to be if you want to wear everyone yeah if you want to show up to a critical incident and bea force multiplier and improve the outcome of it these are the things you need to do you knowotherwise dude like call 9-1-1 or don’t get involved you know what i mean uh the the lastthing is gonna be the mindset that i talked about uh last night in the class uh i think of it likea switch i’m either off or i’m on if i’m switched on like when i go to work i try to have a veryhigh degree of situational awareness and that’s my mental perception of everything that’shappening around me right now and my my best guess of what might happen in the near futurethat’s my situational awareness i’m always trying to improve it trying to get it better so i’mlooking all right i walk inside of a building where’s the exit there’s exit there’s theexit where’s the windows there’s a window there’s a window is that a window that if ineeded to break it out i could break it out maybe is it a triple pane window withbars in it i can’t get out that way that’s that’s all part of my essay building ilook in the crowd i scan all right where is the more unsavory person you know the guy with thethe mean furled brow when he’s clenching his fists or the guy who’s had too much alcohol that’sgetting in everyone’s business that you’re like that dude’s probably gonna cause a problem lateron tonight you know i’m always trying to do that especially at work the problem with that is it’sit’s mentally taxing when you do that for hours at a time which realistically is impossiblebut when you do that for an extended period of time you get exhausted when you get homeyou want to pass out your brain is overloaded with all the information that it was taking inand and you trying to process that information uh so that’s the switched on the opposite endof that spectrum that hyper awareness spectrum would be switched off and that’s when you’reat home drooling on yourself you know just like running through youtube videos andwatching rick and morty and stuff so uh i don’t want to be switched off when i’m out inpublic if i’m not working or something i also i don’t want to be completely hyper aware where i’ma drag to be around so somewhere in between that it’s like a venn diagram two circles somewhere inthat center of on and off is is where you want to be most of the time right so uh a good exampleof that is i go a lot of people use it i go to a restaurant and i sit down and i’m seated with myeye toward the exit yeah that is ideal but what if it’s a restaurant where you don’t choose where youseat and you don’t have an option of where you’re gonna see yeah okay that’s fine i’m not in asituation where it really matters i will sit there and every now and then i’ll glance or maybe i tellhey dude uh you got the door right just in case and you’re like yeah cool that’s the end of it itdoesn’t mean uh you have to always be hyper-aware and it doesn’t mean you have to be drooling onyourself another example is when we we you pull up to the stop light in your car and you look overand the person’s got their head down staring at their cell phone and you think like dude i couldi could walk up and bash this guy’s window in and he’d have no idea you know or if you’re eversitting in a parking lot and someone comes and knocks on the window and you’re like ah you getthat surprise that’s a little that’s a that’s a little egregious man have a a better situationalawareness than that so somewhere in between the two where your mindset needs to be so with allof those we’ll go over to uh back to the shooting incident so uh we got a guy who trains here uh youknow without naming names or anything like that uh i was i was working and we got a report thatuh someone was shot right in front of a smoke shop so we start rolling up there we arriveand there’s a guy on the ground shot and the person we train with is there and he’s doing thebest he can to to save this person who got shot uh i think he got shot six times maybe sothere it was a good amount of blood and um uh well heroic effort right he wasn’t involved inany way he was driving home with his uh wife and kids yeah driving home with his baby yeah and hesaw that person on the ground bleeding and uh and decided i want to help this person i don’t wantthis person to die and went over there to help him and that’s the extent of the knowledge thathe had going into that incident very noble but uh some alternatives what could have happened let’ssay that that was an active shooter situation he doesn’t know right no one knows becauseall you’re seeing is a guy on the ground let’s say he he pulls the car over stops thecar goes inside hey what’s going on he gets shot now it’s another guy dead or let’s say hegoes he starts helping that guy and the bad guy’s still there and the bad guy jumps inhis car with his wife and kids and takes off this is something that could happen you know andi’m not saying what he did is wrong by any means you know and i’m sure uh for the guy that got shotthat really meant a lot that someone stopped and tried to help him yeah all i’m saying is thatyou need to think of these things before you go in there know what the possible outcomes are idon’t know what the situation is i know there’s a guy bleeding on the ground over there i have agun i have first aid kit i’m with my family hey uh you guys go around the corner call 9-1-1i’m gonna go inside here and try to help maybe that’s all it takes to keep them safeand for you to positively affect that outcome you know and um and when i showed up uh i thinkthey were using like the they got some rags from the store or something they had some cloth theywere trying to plug plug the guy’s holes you know because he was squirting out a lot of blood sothey’re trying to to stop the bleeding and um uh once we pulled him off of there you could see he’she he was very affected yeah yeah almost in shock you know just very affected by the situationnot saying that training would have helped that and i’m not saying he wasn’t trained i’m justsaying if that was you would you have been able to perform would you have been able to positivelyinfluence that situation or would you be a burden on the situation it’s just things that you gotto think about if you want to you if you find yourself in a critical situation and that one’sexternal you know that’s one that he inserted himself into you know so that’s kind of my mymindset and and then when you on once you get involved a lot of things can happen yeah a lot ofthings yeah maybe nothing will happen but a lot of things because you become a witness already yeahwell that’s true yeah i mean he’s probably gonna get subpoenaed and have to go to court yeah uh idon’t know anyone here yeah exactly so and that’s always inconvenient for people yeah why did youhelp yeah you helped this guy you know just like no because i want to help right but it um it waslike uh like taking that action was he had like some guts to do that yeah you know yeah so it’svery like unfortunately there are no guy didn’t die right oh no no yeah he didn’t die uh wowthat was an interesting shooting that was uh uh he went inside the smoke shop some people showedup they they saw him go inside he and then they waited for him to come out the guy exits the smokeshop and he got he got shot a few times it was a that was a pretty intense situation to say theleast but yeah and you show up like afterwards so you go to court when that happened too or notyou like because that whole thing is still they’re still going on you know we don’t i don’tknow all the details about it and stuff and then i you know like if i did know detailsi wouldn’t i wouldn’t uh put uh put a lot of details out there you know like compromisesome sort of investigation it’s just a unfortunate situation that happened and yeahthings like that happen right yeah yeah yeah there’s i mean even in san diego there’s shootingsevery every every day man sometimes sometimes you go a period with nothing bad happening and andthen sometimes it’s multiple multiple incidents a day you know yeah i mean it’s crazy fortunately ithink overall san diego is pretty awesome you know you want to go cause trouble orgo to the beach beach sounds nice for most people you know yeah well brian umwhere’s the the worst area like around san diego i mean i don’t want to throw down neighborhoodsbut okay but there are you know there’s areas that are worse than others you know but itreally depends like how what happened you know yeah any any place could be bad yeahright i mean the parking lot here you know in the middle of the night there’snot a lot of nights this is an industrial area like do you really want to be hanging out inthe parking lot at 3am not a lot of good things happen at 3am you know what i mean so you gotta beaware yeah yeah no matter what yeah just make good decisions you know yeah yeah and me i’m not gonnago to you know i’m not gonna be hanging out behind a walmart at 3 a.m yeah you know that’s definitelylike that’s something bad is gonna happen though yeah for sure for sure but uh for likeuh for a woman like what is your advice for a woman when they’re alone right and doyou think like they always should have like a company with them like when they go in certainplace certain areas they gotta think about like every time like they do something like theygotta think about because there are a lot of cases where uh women get abused and all thatright so it and and sometimes happens because they’re not aware about the situation rightthey’re not aware about the the environment right they’re just like oh you know yeah i’m safehere yeah they’re in the switched off san diego yeah exactly so it’s a must like in inespecially for a woman when they’re alone to make sure they always aware when they’re bythemselves in the parking lot or something right they need to know where they parked the car likethe preference like they need to have like in order like to choose this spot to stop their carand go to the grocery store or something so what is the best advice to give okay so first i i wouldsay we all you know as a as a man or trying to be a good man you know obviously not the best rightbut always trying to to be a good man you want to protect women right yeah uh the thing is like menare the the victims of violent crime you know like when a woman gets hurt it’s it’s tragic we feelit as men we feel it inside but more men you’re more likely to be the victim of a violent crime ifyou’re a man that’s the reality of wow if you look at the numbers men really yeah so like you aremore likely to get attacked than angelica that’s just life right um with that being said i wouldn’tgive uh there’s there’s not really any advice that i would give specific to a woman that i wouldn’tgive to a man because it’s going to apply equally to to each of them yeah you know i would say yeahi would say train jiu jitsu i say are you strong uh no well get strong are you yeah exactly are youuh are you making good decisions with your parking well i just kind of park wherever it’s open andsay like well take a second thought and just is that the best place to park your car and if it isdo it you know i’d say have a better mindset just a slight tactical thought to what you do willprobably keep you safe and i would say that to a man and a woman the other thing i would sayis you know it’s hard in california to get a concealed carry most people don’t have one butif if you can have a gun i would say have a gun a gun is especially for a woman who you know mostwomen right not all but most women are going to be physically weaker than the the average maleattacker the gun doesn’t care the gun is the great equalizer that is the woman’s right magic pillyou know she pulls that thing out and suddenly she’s in charge of the situation but i would alsosay that’s the exact same thing with a guy uh also when people have guns you know you tend to be nicebecause you don’t want to get shot yeah like if i think that a guy has a gun i’m going to be a lotnicer because i don’t want to get shot right so uh so i’m a big fan of them you know even as a copknowing i might like hey that guy has a gun i’m like all right i’d better be no mind my p’s andq’s man but uh um if you can’t then i would say some sort of uh some sort of knife or uh pepperspray actually is is pretty awesome i don’t like to use it at work um it affects me hard it affectsyou as well yeah yeah yeah so i i don’t like to use it but it uh let’s say a guy is coming upto you and he’s acting really weird um it’s not he’s not presenting a situation where you couldnecessarily stab or shoot him or punch him or something like that but you’re telling him hey getback man you’re you’re really close i don’t like it he keeps coming you know you use pepper sprayyou spray him in the eye they they start doing one of these the cops show up and uh the guy’slike i was just trying to have this guy help me or whatever well all i did was pepper spray theguy it’s a really low level use of force there’s no real harm there you know just wash it withwater everyone goes home so it’s something that if you’re a little over zealous with your decisionto to use force and all it was was pepper spray it’s a it’s a lot easier to wipe that off thanit is to wipe off like a stab wound or you shoot someone yeah you know so uh i’m i’m a big fan ofof pepper spray being something that people carry but with that you know if you’re carryingit it can’t be at the bottom of your purse or somewhere in your your uh and it’s just likeyeah yeah yeah oh hang on and then you gotta look for it you know like if it’s something that youcarry and you might intend on using it have it in a position where you can grab it and use ityou know what i mean right away yeah otherwise it’s why carry it right if i if i’m if i alwayshave a gun or something like why am i going to keep it uh locked up in a car no i’m not going tobe able to to use it effectively yeah for sure and most of the time just showing it or them knowingyou have something is enough to to handle the situation so the big last the biggest lesson orthe great lessons that we have like from today is go train jiu jitsu no matter what if youare a cop or not or i say how about we we say grappling right because some people theysay they think jiu jitsu they only think one thing but like if you say grappling there’sa lot of uh karate studios like teaching yeah that’s that’s not real that’s not rightyeah yeah like i see like every taekwondo karate studios i don’t have nothing against them youknow but they they see like the power of jujitsu and they have that ego of not like making theirstudio like becoming a jiu-jitsu studio they just start teaching grappling yeah and i i seeif you if you type right now karate san diego you’re gonna fight at school and then they schoolthis school has jujitsu and they jujitsu look like it’s just like oh they don’t even roll they justlike do technique yeah so you gotta roll you know you gotta try you gotta you gotta put yourselfunder pressure like you say under situations uh but that’s the test yeah like everyone will dothe the this is what my favorite part of lattos everyone teaches technique techniques good andsome places teach you better than the others but but here you’re gonna you’re gonna fight a lotyou know like last night there’s a lot of new people we did five six minute rounds most ofthe i think a lot of the guys there that was the first time they ever fought you know for sixminutes and then they had to do it five times yeah that’s a test if uh if you can do these techniquesin that situation under someone who doesn’t want you to do it you know it’s a good technique yeahand the problem is sometimes people they think just because they’re not overweight they workout everywhere yeah they think they’re really fit exactly exactly so i have a i have a newmember right here uh he’s a white belt and man he’s just start training right he juststarted training and like he trains like first class second class third class and thenthe fourth class he started like sparring more so the first time i put into spar iput into spar with the brown belt but you can ask like you can think oh man you put thiswhite belt brand new white belt this part against brown belt it’s safe here it’s way safer rightit’s it’s better so he was doing my class and i said okay go with the go with this brown bellhere and i say i told the brown baby just take care like just make him move like slowlyyou know help him out show him like the way so he started rolling he started like floating andi may suddenly like two minutes fight he’s like stop stop stop i gotta throw up he went to thebathroom and he threw up and then he came back and then i’m like man are you okay he’s like yeah i’mgood so it’s not because he was rolling super hard it was because he was completely out of shapeyeah he’s completely out of shape the guy that was helping him was just like you know flowinglike just help me move like move here moving there and he just like start like freaking out becausehe doesn’t have much technique you know and that can happen so um it’s it’s something thatpeople needs to realize and needs to know they they must to put themselves into a test right uhmy goal as a coach is to make you a better person and make you a better jiu jitsu fighter makeyour techniques better right and show you like show you how you can you can know about you moreand more so when you train of course if you start right now you never done that before you can havelike some cramps you can have like some some like you’re going to be like dizzy or you’re going tolike feel like your heart beat right of course i’m not going to be like no stop keep going keep goingno i know your limits right so and then it doesn’t happen very often some people they come more inshape than other people but this guy he came to me and said no i’m super shaped like i have a supershape like i surf every day you know i i run you know i do pull-ups and this and that but when youroll it’s different you know every muscle in your body exactly is going to be needed for this it’snot even like maybe you can even let’s say as a cop or as a person that is defending yourselfon the street like sometimes you can think that your conditioning is just your heartbeat butit’s not it’s your grips it’s your muscle like you may like gonna have a good conditioning goodcardio like you’re not gonna feel tired but your muscles gonna start getting fatigued just becauseyou never put yourself in that situation where somebody is squeezing and then your brainis adding to it you’re trying to think yeah everything’s on overlapping yeah it’s it’s soimportant to to put yourself under pressure in certain situations so it was amazing um brian totalk with you i think we talk we cover a lot of stuff and yeah and we can talk more and more
