business terribly elusive what does consistencyin business was like what does it represent when we say we want more firmnes that’s somethingi hear people say very frequently but what does it represent and why does it sometimes feel completelyunattainable difficult to obtain or stymie to accomplish there are several financiers in myfamily including my daddy and myself so really close contacts and plainly i have somewhat tight ties tothe small business community through you through my students through our members and through thebusiness owners and programme and masterminds that i’m in myself basically i know a lot ofself-employed people and i have heard a lot of stories what i know is that we are all alwayslooking for consistency or at least that’s what we say in our business typically that entails salesbut it could make interesting thing like customers or follows depending on what you uniquely aretrying to accomplish it could mean any number of things is consistency achievable i believethat it is but we have to work on what we really truly mean like really identified that dowe represent when we say we want uniformity i’ve noticed that for many beings consistencyreally only intends one thing which is steady upward path of auctions month after month let’ssay a business like yours had 50 sales in april 40 marketings in may and 60 marketings in june numerous peoplein the middle of that like in the moment in the middle of may would not regard that as consistentthe commentary would be my auctions are down compared to the month of april i care my saleswere more consistent maybe even some worrying about the downturn i know that’s how i would feelright utterly fully be recognized that awfully relatable side document most of the little insights i provision onthis evidence i need to hear them more likewise consistency does not equate with emergence all of the timeand inherently “ve got nothing” to do with it i can routinely interpret a downward tend but that’s neverwhat anyone wants when they say they want more uniformity so i think the language here is reallyimportant people certainly do equate consistency with more swelling so let’s be more specificabout what we really mean when we say consistency i think that’s the first step and iwill talk about that more here in time a moment i’ve been in business now virtually 11 years and i’vehad zero firmnes by the definition of steady upward path of auctions month after monthforever if we look at my business in three or four month clods there is none of that we might findone stretch in 11 years duration where every month there was a steady increase in sales month aftermonth i feel like most people would not like that i don’t either but i prefer to look at my businessmore holistically if i only look at success as period to era or week to week or month to month whateveri would feel like a downfall more frequently than not because it’s rare to have consecutive daysweeks months where it’s always a run in the upward direction or even the same exact thingday after day if your ultimate goal is to grow you should know that things can varyand you can be consistently ripening even when things run and go up and down upand down is normal if we look at my business again for the purposes of the 11 years i’ve beenin business yes can i have ascertained consistently an upward growth overall and that’s great but inthe moment in those short term chunks that up and down can feel very jarring and like something isbroken even after all these years this is very consistent with what i’ve find happens formy friends and family members who are also small business owners consistency is happening longterm but short term it’s either not or at least it doesn’t feel like it because it’s not every singlemonth so when we say consistency we represent one thing but it’s not really what we’re after but does thatmean like even though there is that variation does that aim these people aren’t successful of coursenot it’s almost like we don’t see the forest for the trees various kinds of a thing even after all theseyears i’ve had to actively work through and actually learn to understand and expect discrepancy and knowthat that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world countries or that anything is broken and it might never bethat i achieve the consistency or any compatibility but that’s the only but that’s not the only wayto measure growth or success if we make ourselves a more liberal and reasonable thought of consistencythen we have the opportunity to celebrate success more often i just think that consistency is tooloose of a word for most of us to feel any sort of security with more we still say it we all say it wecan have consistent four digit months in business and still have inconsistency four figurescould be a thousand dollars it could be seven thousand dollars it could represent 100 auctions the coming week and no sales next week in the end though we are probably happy with theresult in revenue but maybe the lifestyle or the difference in like what we’re doing week toweek based on that doesn’t feel standard so how can we feel better about short-term inconsistencythat does ultimately imply long-term consistency i think two things would be really helpful hereone redefining what consistency actually means to you personally and then understandingthe actual data that goes into that so that you can set points and beliefs accordinglyreally really important that goals are realistic otherwise we mounted ourselves up for collapse nowjust knowing that increment or sustainability in your business is not certainly equate withshort-term firmnes is huge it’s normal that things go up and down within a wander but if yourdefinition of firmnes doesn’t account for that you won’t feel good about it it’s more normalto see fluctuation than it is to see simply upward proliferation every single month but generally knowingit’s normal doesn’t make anybody feel better fairly about it is now time the longer that you’ve been inbusiness the longer that arc of compatibility gets for someone who’s been in business justfour months consistency week to week is or at least feels most important or more weightybut for someone who’s been in business 20 years maybe they care more about two or five year cyclesone thing i’ve learned is that facts matter more than feelings but feelings truly impact how wemove through each day so “re feeling better” about it was essential to but understanding the facts aboutit is critical now i believe that understanding the facts of the case will help us to feel better and i alwaysalways suggest that parties look at their business more holistically in terms of revenue interms of everything that matters to them so look at your data i know i hate it too ihate looking at data but it is really important like i said critical data includes thingsthat happen in and outside of your business for example you need to look at your stats throughthe lens of other relevant information like 2020 i look at the stats in your shop oryour google analytics or your bank info isn’t enough to really understand what happenedin 2020 right in your business you need to bear in mind all of the many other things that were goingon it’s impossible for every year to be comparable in every highway there are so many influences that impacthow things exit that are completely out of our ensure and you know that it was very challengingin 2020 to use 2019 as any kind of a usher because the world was not the same the world we livedin in 2020 was not the world we lived in in 2019 and now in 2021 are we exploiting 2020 as a guide for2 020 for 2021 it’s really hard to do that right because it’s two completely different thingsso the next time you catch yourself bidding for more consistency find out from yourself what doesthat really truly mean to you what are you really after and what data can you use to createa realistic expectation or goal around that because it’s not usually that we care so muchif we fill one prescribe a date every day or three orderings a date every third daylight it’s that we wantto see growth we want to feel success or improve something specifically in a certain way definewhat that are meant to you and you’ll have a much better time with consistency and you’ll be ableto tackle consistency better i really hope that this explanation and slant on consistencyand defining it to be something more exact helps you to feel better about whatever short-terminconsistencies there exist your business while still maintaining a positive focus about theoverall state and wellness of your business so again i need to hear these thingsfor myself over and over as well even after 11 years i’m still like whati gotta get my brain right about that so i’m right there with you totally understandit’s frustrating to see inconsistency or what is actually inconsistency but if wecan characterize for ourselves what consistency genuinely means to us and what we’re actuallyafter we have much better chances of control success and feeling successful so expressed appreciation for somuch for letting me
